Living Lab 4

Multi hazard Sectoral
climate change assessment for Tourism

Crete, Greece

This Living Lab focuses on the island of Crete (Greece). The tourism sector is an important focus, and is a key economic sector in Greece, which needs suitable adaptation strategies to the high climatic variability, flooding and predicted impacts of climate change. However, other sectors considered include water management, transportation infrastructure, and energy. The area has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild-wet winters with a high intra-and-inter annual variability. This is projected to increase in the future, with a likelihood of reduction in precipitation and increase in temperature, and increase in sea level, flooding and storm surges. Improved understanding of climate and water resources is essential to sustainable development in this region.
